Milestones to a Cure

Creating a world free from psoriatic disease and its burdens.

With 60 years of momentum pushing us forward, the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) Milestones to a Cure initiative is accelerating progress on our path to a cure. NPF is committing $2 million to fund up to four research projects that identify critical barriers to a cure and put forth bold, innovative solutions.

By passing these key milestones, NPF will achieve our mission to find a cure for psoriatic disease.

“We have earned our way to this incredible moment in history, where we now stand within view of durable remission, highly effective personalized medicine, and soon, a cure for psoriatic disease,” said Leah M. Howard, J.D., the President and CEO of the National Psoriasis Foundation.

“Our mission has always called for us to stand alongside our community and support those of us impacted by psoriatic disease. It also mandates that we do not let the challenges of today slow our progress toward a cure,” added Howard. “While we still have crucial work to do to better the lives of everyone with psoriasis or PsA today, we simultaneously find ourselves at a place where research and clinical knowledge have us closer to achieving a cure than ever before."

Milestones We've Passed So Far

For six decades, healthcare professionals, researchers, and community members, all convened by NPF, have moved us closer to a world free from the burdens of psoriatic disease. Some of the key markers along the way include:

  • Recognition of psoriatic disease as a systemic disease, not a cosmetic condition
  • Approval of the first biologic for psoriasis and the proliferation of highly effective treatments
  • Discovery of several genetic markers linked to psoriatic disease
  • Identification of the connection between psoriatic disease and other diseases, including heart disease

A cure is now within sight.

Researching Toward a Cure

"The science has advanced enough that we can begin to contemplate a cure in a serious way. I firmly believe NPF is positioned to lead the way."

– Dr. Wilson Liao, University of California, San Francisco, NPF Medical Board member, researcher, and advocate

What a Cure Means to Me

"No rash, no itching, no flaking. I would feel human again."

"Remission would be a day without pain. Cure would be back to climbing mountains."

"A cure would mean I have my life back."

"Cure: being normal"

– People living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis during a focus group

People living with psoriatic disease have informed every decision made at NPF since its inception, meaning that research initiatives have always been aligned with helping people with the highest needs. Through it all, the NPF community has kept a cure as the ultimate end goal. The Milestones to Cure investments will fuel significant progress toward that cure.
