The Skinny on Topicals

Presented by
Steven Feldman, M.D., Ph.D.

Topical medications, such as creams and ointments and other products applied directly to the skin, are often the first treatments doctors prescribe for mild to moderate psoriasis. People with more severe psoriasis also use topicals to reinforce systemic or biologic medications they are taking. Dr. Steven Feldman, a dermatologist at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., helps you learn about the different types of topicals available, including cortisone-type medications (so called "steroids"), vitamin A and D derivatives and anthralin, all available by prescription, as well as over-the-counter products such as salicylic acid and coal tar.
