Presenting Patient Knowledge and Attitudes About Biosimilar Treatments at AAD 2025

Alexandria, VA – March 7, 2025

The National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) is proud to present critical insights into patient perspectives on biosimilar treatments for psoriatic disease at the prestigious American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting. The AAD Annual Meeting, held in Orlando from March 7-11, 2025, is the world's largest dermatology conference, attracting over 10,000 medical professionals from around the globe.

The poster, led by author Jessica Smith, and titled "Assessing Patient Knowledge and Attitudes About Biosimilar Treatments for Psoriatic Disease: Data from the 2023 National Psoriasis Foundation Advocacy Survey" underscores the importance of incorporating patient voices in dermatological research and treatment strategies.

The study, conducted by NPF, surveyed people living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis to evaluate their knowledge and attitudes towards biosimilar treatments. The findings reveal significant gaps in patient awareness and understanding of biosimilars, highlighting the need for enhanced educational efforts.

Key findings from the study include:

  • 71.7% of respondents rated their understanding of biosimilars as ‘Poor’ or ‘Very Poor’
  • 42.1% of respondents indicated that they ‘Strongly Disagree’ to ‘Somewhat Disagree’ they would be comfortable using a biosimilar with current knowledge
  • The most trusted sources of information included: health care providers, patient advocacy organizations, and the internet

“This research is particularly relevant in light of the NPF Medical Board’s recent position statement acknowledging that biosimilars are an important part of the modern psoriasis treatment landscape,” said Guy Eakin, Ph.D., Chief Scientific and Medical Officer at NPF. He also emphasized the importance of understanding patient perspectives, "Patients' views and concerns are crucial in shaping effective treatment strategies. By listening to their experiences and addressing their knowledge gaps, we can better support their journey towards improved health outcomes."

The poster presentation aims to shed light on these critical issues and encourage health care providers to address patient concerns more effectively. By improving patient education and communication, health care professionals can help patients make informed decisions about their treatment options.

The oral presentation will be on March 8, 2025, at 9:25 a.m. at the Orange County Convention Center (West Building, Exhibit Hall B4, Poster Center 1).
