Although biosimilars are not generic versions of biologics, comparable to how generic drugs are substituted for name-brand drugs, biosimilars may be substituted for the prescribed biologic. Each state has different rules around when this substitution can be made and how it is communicated to the patient and prescriber. In all 50 states and D.C., the prescriber may indicate that the prescription is to be dispensed only as written and no substitutions will be made.
