Challenge discrimination

Many people with psoriasis report experiences with discrimination in public places such as swimming pools, hair salons and gyms, and also in the workplace, caused by a misplaced fear that psoriasis is contagious. Fortunately, there are federal laws designed to protect you from discrimination.

When it comes to challenging discrimination, you are your own best advocate. We've gathered resources to help you learn about your legal rights and what to do if you experience several types of discrimination.

It is illegal for your employer to deny you permission to miss work for medical appointment or for phototherapy or other treatments. It's also illegal for an employer to refuse to provide reasonable on-site accommodation for your disability that allow you to perform the essential functions of your job. Legally, an employer may not take any adverse action against an employee because of an employee's disability.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) both provide protection against discrimination on the basis of disability.
